4 | BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS INSPIRING STUDENT LEARNING FOCUS AREA Innovative Programs BATTLE GROUND HIGH SCHOOL OFFERS NATIONAL COLLEGE PREP PROGRAM Many Battle Ground students, including all 600+ at Chief Umtuch Middle School, learn hands-only CPR techniques in health and fitness classes. With "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees blaring through speakers, Chief's students received guidance, instruction, and encouragement from Fire District 3 personnel, representatives from the American Heart Asso- ciation, and local JROTC students. PRIMARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS LEARN LIFE-SAVING CPR TECHNIQUES At Pleasant Valley Primary School, English Language Learners, or ELL students, can come to school early and receive extra help in reading, writing, listening, and speak- ing skills through the Imagine Learning program. Imagine Learning is a computer-based program that offers games and activities designed to teach critical English language and literacy concepts in the ELL student's home language. Each child receives targeted instruction that continually adjusts to their learning needs and abilities. ELL students take state assessments each year to measure their growth in English language proficiency, and Pleasant Valley Pri- mary students perform significantly better than the state average. The 2017 assessment results show that 30.5% have achieved English proficiency, compared to the state average of 13.5% in similar grades. PLEASANT VALLEY PRIMARY STUDENTS GET A LANGUAGE LEARNING BOOST Battle Ground High School students can get an idea of what it is like to do college research and earn college credit through the Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone diploma program. Only 33 high schools in Washington State offer the nationally-recognized program, which was developed in partnership with college faculty, admissions officers, and the College Board. BATTLE GROUND SCHOOLS' CTE PROGRAMS PREPARE STUDENTS FOR LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL Battle Ground Public Schools' mission is to empower all students to reach their highest potential through innovative, creative and supportive learning environments. The district's Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings and related club activities are highly effective in achieving this mission. Battle Ground High School's Financial Operations class, for example, tasks students with running and operating the high school's very own bank branch. And this isn't just a make-believe, practice bankā€”it's an honest to goodness, nearly-full-service branch of iQ Credit Union, and the stu- dents running the show graduate with years of experience working behind the counter and behind the scenes to keep operations running smoothly and accurately. Battle Ground's middle and high school students can choose from 200 CTE courses across 36 content areas to prepare for the academic and professional challenges beyond high school.
