Topics covered are ethics in advertis- ing, marketing, the impact of visual media (symbols, color, imagery), critical analysis, detecting bias and identification of topic (product), audience and purpose. Bridge to College Language Course Code: ENG091/ENG291 State Code: WA0001 Schools: BGHS, PHS, SVHS Grades: 12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: Seniors who score a Level 2 on the ELA Smarter Balanced Assessment, English III Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This course will develop students' college and career read- iness by building skills in focused reading, writing, speak- ing & listening, and research work based on Washington State's K-12 Learning Standards for English language arts (the Common Core State Standards, CCSS-ELA). Students will engage with rigorous texts and learn to use strategies for critical reading, argumentative writing, and indepen- dent thinking while reading unfamiliar texts and respond- ing to them in discussion and writing. The course will also develop essential habits of mind necessary for student success in college, including independence, productive persistence, and metacognition. This course is also a grad- uation pathway according to the State of Washington. British Literature Course Code: ENG023 State Code: 01056 Schools: BGHS, PHS, SVHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This course presents an overview of British literature from the time of Beowulf in the 8th century to the present. Stu- dents will develop an understanding of historical periods as they influenced the literature of the British Isles, as well as see connections to our own American literary heritage. This class is a good preparation for the student who is college-bound for two reasons: one is that many of the "classics" are covered, and the other is that there will be a review of literary analysis and effective essay writing. Honors British Literature Course Code: ENG045 State Code: 01056 Schools: CAM Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I, II & III Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: Honors and CADR The main goals of this course are to understand the his- torical context surrounding literary works in which British writers wrote from the Anglo- Saxons through World War II, be able to paraphrase and understand unfamiliar and difficult language, identify elements of poetry, identify the elements of prose genres (fiction, drama, satire), make inferences about literature based on textual evidence, understand the influences of a variety of cultures on the development of the development of early British litera- ture, apply knowledge of Latin roots to understand new vocabulary, and implement the Six Traits of Writing into well composed essays. Career English will show you how to: build a resume, write letters of interest, thank you letters and letters of complaint. We also explore the technical writing skills necessary for business. We will in- vestigate your skills and interest to explore career alterna- tives. Interview strategies, team building and communica- tion skills will also be covered.
