47 Battle Ground Public Schools High School Course Guide 2020-21 Creative Writing Course Code: ENG024 State Code: 01104 Schools: BGHS, PHS, RHL, SVHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR In this course, students will become acquainted with the various devices and techniques writers use in writing poetry, personal essays, and short fiction. This class covers various modes of creative writing, including short stories, poetry, and creative non-fiction. Through extensive read- ing of corresponding literature, students will analyze the aspects of creative writing including plot development, characterization, utilizing figurative language, imagery, and effective narration. Students will incorporate these skills into their own writing. In this course, students will be- come acquainted with the various devices and techniques writers use in writing poetry, personal essays, expository writing, argumentative writing, and short fiction; revision and peer review will be taught as key components to the writing process. Critical Cinema Studies Course Code: ENG078 State Code: 01061 Schools: PHS, RHL, SVHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR Critical Cinema Studies is a class designed to help stu- dents use their analytical skills and knowledge of literary elements to become more perceptive viewers of film. Stu- dents will gain these skills by learning film history, reading texts that inspire film, and watching films from various genres and time periods. Student work includes, but is not limited to writing analysis papers, discussions, research, culminating in a final multimedia research project. Drama I Course Code: ENG012 State Code: 05055 Schools: PHS, BGHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: Yes Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: English or Fine Art Course Designation: CADR Students are introduced to dramatic concepts and acting skills. They will analyze plays for setting, character, plot, and dramatic action. Students must attend a play and write a critique of that play. *This course is not approved as a core course for NCAA eligibility. Only English credit for 4th year English requirement. Drama II Course Code: ENG013 State Code: 05055 Schools: PHS, BGHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: Yes Course Field Trip Prerequisite: B or better in Drama I or instructor approval Graduation Requirement: English or Fine Art Course Designation: CADR Theater students will build on the performance skills and literary analysis they developed in Drama I and II. Students will continue to analyze and perform dramatic literature and participate in skill-building performance exercises. Students will attend live theater and write critiques of them. *This class is not approved for NCAA eligibility. Can only be used for English credit Senior Year. Drama III Course Code: ENG014/ENG214 State Code: 05055 Schools: PHS Grades: 10-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: Yes, Course Field Trip Prerequisite: B or better in Drama I and II or instructor approval Graduation Requirement: English or Fine Art Course Designation: CADR In this year-long course, theater students will build on the performance skills and literary analysis they developed in Drama I and II. Students will continue to analyze and per- form dramatic literature and participate in skill-building performance exercises. Students will attend live theater and write critiques of them. Prerequisite is a B or better in Drama I and II or instructor approval. This class may be repeated for credit.
