Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This course provides students with basic English skills nec- essary for successful writing, including grammar, vocab- ulary, and punctuation. Students will also practice basic library research skills. The class focuses on a combination of writing, reading (fiction and non-fiction) and oral com- munication using short stories, novels, poetry and drama. Writing assignments will vary in length. Students will work on their reading comprehension as well as critical thinking and understanding of themes and concepts. Honors English I Course Code: ENG003/ENG203 State Code: 01001 Schools: BGHS, PHS, CAM Grades: 9th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: Honors, CADR While following the same curriculum as English I, this hon- ors course will require more in-depth reading and more sophisticated writing. This course will challenge students to increase their overall knowledge of literature and devel- op communication skills. This class covers a wide variety of literature, including literary analysis, short stories, novels, mythology, essays, journals, oral presentations, poetry, drama, vocabulary development, research, etc, at a brisk pace. Students will write literary analysis papers as well as narrative, descriptive, persuasive and expository essays. English II Course Code: ENG073/ENG273 State Code: 01002 Schools: BGHS, PHS, RHL, SVHS Grades: 10th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 This course is also offered online. Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This course will continue to build on skills learned in English I courses. There will be increased emphasis on reading comprehension, analysis, and discussion skills in the literature units, various modes of writing including re- search, and oral communication. Emphasis will be placed on the elements of short stories, novels, poetry, nonfiction, drama, and novels. Students will also prepare to take the ELA state exam during this year. Honors English II Course Code: ENG074/ENG274 State Code: 01002 Schools: BGHS, PHS, CAM Grades: 10th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: Honors and CADR Honors English II will follow the basic outline of regular English II; however, more analytical reading and sophisti- cated writing will be required. Students will read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. Class time will be used for discussion, development of communication skills, and writing. This class will be rigorous and challenging and should help prepare students for the AP classes available in the junior and senior year. Student work will include but is not limited to: writing literary analysis papers, creating presentations, and taking part in discussions. The class will continue the development of the skills introduced the freshmen and sophomore English classes. Writing will take a variety of forms, including expository, persuasive, and research. Students will read major works of American literature and examine the important themes and philosophical ideas they contain.
