50 Battle Ground Public Schools High School Course Guide 2020-21 High School Course Descriptions ENGLISH AP Literature and Composition Course Code: ENG035/ENG235 State Code: 01006 Schools: BGHS, PHS, CAM Grades: 11-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: AP Exam Fee Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: AP Course and CADR This college-level class, is for juniors and seniors, follows the requirements of the College Board and focuses on building and measuring the skills students need to be successful in college. The college-level reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills will be tested on the AP English Literature/Composition exam in the spring; passage of the test will result in advanced college credit. Students will engage in thoughtful analysis, through both reading and writing, of difficult literature, from 16th cen- tury to contemporary British and American authors; the texts will be challenging, thought-provoking, and some- times controversial. Journalism I Course Code: ENG006/ENG206 State Code: 01148 Schools: PHS Grades: 10-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: English or Occupational Course Designation: CADR Students who are considering a career in communica- tions, including online publications, advertising, mar- keting, and public relations including social media and broadcast publication are encouraged to enroll. Students will learn a wide range of digital communications and journalistic styles such as news and features articles, press releases, web pages, newsletters, broadcast scripts, back- grounders, photography, publication layout and design, public service announcements, blogs, presentations, pub- lic speaking, and advertising. They will work to improve their writing and editing skills, develop the ability to com- municate effectively, work independently and in groups, meet deadlines and fulfill responsibilities. Students in the class publish the PHS school newspaper, The Falcon Flyer, publish the Falcon Athletic Newsletter, F.A.N. and work with the staff members to advertise school events. Since the class is co-curricular, outside class work is required. Journalism II Course Code: ENG027/ENG227 State Code: 11101 Schools: PHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: Journalism I - Most colleges require 3 of the 4 credits of high school English to be literature and composition-based. For this reason, this should be taken as an extra English and not the 4th credit of English for college-bound students. Graduation Requirement: English, Fine Art or Occupational Course Designation: CADR Students who have been enrolled in Journalism I with a desire to continue their work in communications in a leadership position and are considering a career in communications are encouraged to enroll. These students will continue working to improve their writing and editing skills in leadership positions, develop the ability to communicate effectively, work independently and in groups, meet deadlines, and fulfill responsibilities. Students will continue their work in a wide range of digital communications and journalistic styles. Students will use publishing and photography programs proficiently. They will design and publish the PHS school newspaper, The Falcon Flyer, the Falcon Athletic Newsletter, F.A.N. and work with the staff members to advertise school events. Modern Literature Course Code: ENG019 State Code: 01062 Schools: BGHS, PHS, SVHS, CAM Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This course will cover modern and contemporary literature including adult fiction, historical fiction, and nonfiction. The majority of the reading material was written within the last 15 years. It should be noted that the material in the novels may be adult in nature. Students should expect ex- tensive reading and written analysis of novels throughout the semester.
