52 Battle Ground Public Schools High School Course Guide 2020-21 High School Course Descriptions ENGLISH AP Seminar Course Code: ENG048/ENG248 State Code: 22110 Schools: BGHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: AP Course AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages stu- dents in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational literary and philosophical texts; listening to and viewing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students learn to synthe- size information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in research-based written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team. Ultimately, the course aims to equip students with the power to analyze and evaluate infor- mation with accuracy and precision in order to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments. AP Seminar is the first required course of the AP Capstone program. In order to successfully complete the AP Capstone diploma, scores of three or higher must be earned in AP Seminar, AP Research, and four additional AP courses, chosen by each individual student. An AP Seminar and Research Certificate is available for students that earn a 3 or above in both AP Capstone courses, but not the four additional courses. Shakespeare Course Code: ENG042 State Code: 01060 Schools: BGHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR The objective of this class is to achieve an understanding and appreciation of the greatest poet-playwright in the English language. Students will be challenged to move out from behind their desks and bring Shakespeare's language to life. During the semester, the students will learn about the Elizabethan time period and Shakespeare's theater. Students will read at least one comedy, one tragedy, and one history play, with corresponding literary analysis essays. Shake- speare's sonnets and life will also provide areas of study. Speech Course Code: ENG010 State Code: 01199 Schools: BGHS, CAM, RHL Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This course is designed to build personal confidence in public speaking. Students will learn through practice how to speak effectively before a group. Knowledge of specif- ic techniques in oral communication will also be a focus. Developing and applying research skills, writing speeches, evaluating the speeches of other students, and participat- ing in large group discussion of speech techniques will all be emphasized. World Literature Course Code: ENG009 State Code: 01058 Schools: BGHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This course is designed to acquaint students with famous works and authors from around the world. The study of the literature of other cultures will help students become more thoughtful and informed people through their expo- sure to the thoughts and artistry of some of the most ad- mired writers throughout history and the world. The study of this literature will also emphasize good writing, vocabu- lary building and effective oral communication skills. World Mythology Course Code: ENG113 State Code: 01058 Schools: PHS, BGHS, SVHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: English I & II Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR Classical and World Mythology offers a broad overview of mythology from world cultures. Students will be reading engaging and highly memorable stories of classical and world mythology. The retellings, which are clear and easy to understand, include, classical Greek and Roman myths. Also included are Folktales and legends from cultures around the world and visual art, architecture and maps.
