54 Battle Ground Public Schools High School Course Guide 2020-21 High School Course Descriptions ENGLISH English I Course Code: ENG112/ENG312 State Code: 01999 Schools: CASEE Grades: 9-10th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: Student Application to CASEE Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This course provides students with basic English skills necessary for successful writing, which includes grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. Special emphasis will be giv- en to descriptive, narrative, and comparative writing. Lit- erature units will contain all major genres including short story, fiction, drama, poetry, and nonfiction. Students will work on their reading comprehension as well as critical thinking and understanding of themes and concepts. Stu- dents will use their reading and writing skills to research topics on agriculture, environmental issues, forestry, wild- life, salmon, and native amphibians, Students will use current periodicals, the Internet, and industry profession- als as resources as well as personal field work they con- duct, to produce and publish their research. English II Course Code: ENG119/ENG319 State Code: 01999 Schools: CASEE Grades: 10-11th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: Student Application to CASEE Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR CASEE English classes utilize methodologies of The Language of Literature, Shortcuts for the Student Writer, and Step-Up to Writing. Students focus on note-taking skills, active reading, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, essay content and organization, thesis writing, essays of argumentation, narratives, persuasive writing, journal writing, poetry, analytical writing, response writing, and research skills using a variety of technology, scientific and classic literature. Students will prepare multimedia presentations and present research to peers and com- munity members. Students will also engage in discussion including in class discussions and online discussions with their peers. English III Course Code: ENG124/ENG324 State Code: 01999 Schools: CASEE Grades: 11-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: Student Application to CASEE Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This course will lead students through a variety of liter- ature focused on how agriculture, food processing, and culinary events have played a central role in America's history and culture from pre colonial times to the pres- ent. Over the course of the year, students will identify and understand common themes found in literature as well as continue to work on necessary English skills in written and oral communication. Persuasive writing, informative writing, critical analysis, and research will be stressed. English IV Course Code: ENG151/ENG251 State Code: 01999 Schools: CASEE Grades: 12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: Student Application to CASEE Graduation Requirement: English Course Designation: CADR This is a yearlong course that will lead students through the analysis and evaluation of many forms of literature independently, in group discussion, and in writing. This lit- erature will include fiction and nonfiction essays and nov- els, drama, poetry, short stories, and current events. Using the context of Biotechnology and Microbiology provides a fascinating framework for the study of cultural, political, and religious events around the world over the course of recorded history. The influence of microorganisms on lit- erature is vast due to its central role in many major events, wars, cuisines, tragedies, scientific breakthroughs, and much more. In addition, these fields lend themselves well to works of drama and science fiction, which the students will read and respond to prior to creating their own works of literature and performing and filming their own dramas.
