55 Battle Ground Public Schools High School Course Guide 2020-21 High School Course Descriptions AFJROTC Civics Course Code: SOC024 State Code: 09999 Schools: BGHS, PHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: Yes Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Social Studies/Civics Course Designation: CADR Civics – AFJROTC is a core social studies course that introduces students to the historical and contemporary perspective of civic life, politics, and government through the study of limited and unlimited governments. It delves into necessity of politics and government through anal- ysis of history, geography, religions, languages, culture, political systems, economics, social issues, environmental concerns, and human rights. 21 st century skills as defined by the Partnership for 21 st Century Skills are integrated into the lesson objectives and samples of behavior. Must complete state mandated Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA). AFJROTC Global Topics Course Code: SOC224 State Code: 09999 Schools: BGHS, PHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: Yes Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Social Studies CWHGP Course Designation: CADR The focus of study is current world politics, economics, culture, military and geographic problems that impact upon the US, foreign and domestic policy. Areas of study include Europe, Asia, Latin America, Canada, the Middle East, Africa, strategic decisions, arms control, energy, international trade and agreements, world economy, environment, and comparative religion. Students will engage in a systematic study of the American political system. The goal is to enhance student understanding of individual rights and responsibilities, representative government, citizen participation, and citizen influence of public policy. Students will also learn about leadership and management techniques, health and fitness, and financial management. All students are required to wear an Air Force provided uniform one day per week. This course is a graduation course for seniors. AFJROTC Health and Aviation History Course Code: VTI376 State Code: 09002 Schools: BGHS, PHS Grades: 9-10th Length: Semester 2 only Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Social Studies Elective or Occupational Course Designation: CADR The Aviation History curriculum covers the historical development of flight from balloons to the current war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Leadership instruction stress citizenship, military tradition, uniform wear, basic drill skills as well as study habits and time management. Students are required to wear an Air Force furnished uniform one day per week. This course is taken second semester after students take AFJROTC Health, A Journey Into Aviation History. Applied Psychology Course Code: SCO028/SOC228 State Code: 04254 Schools: PHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Semester or year-long Credit: 0.5 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Social Studies Elective or Elective Course Designation: CADR Applied Psychology is an introduction to psychology course and it will include projects that Crimson Crew designs. This course satisfies a social studies 0.5 elective and a 0.5 elective. Students will learn about personality, identity, developmental stages, motivation, emotion and stress, coping skills, learning, study skills, memory, mental illness (abnormal behavior), treatment, social psychology and more. Students will have an integral part in positive- ly affecting the culture at Prairie High School, and in the community, through Crimson Crew projects. Projects Crimson Crew have developed are gratitude parties to- ward custodians, counselors, coaches, Fairway, and many more. Students will use their imaginations and create meaningful ways to celebrate life on campus and beyond. Students who have taken psychology comment that psy- chology is extremely helpful for life and they wish it was a required course. You will find this course very applicable to your own life.
