58 Battle Ground Public Schools High School Course Guide 2020-21 High School Course Descriptions AP Microeconomics is an introductory course that focuses on the core principles of economics that apply to student's daily lives. Students will learn to think economically, mean- ing thinking in terms of money and resources. The course also develops students' familiarity with supply and demand, markets, and distributions of income, recessions, and the role of government in the economy. Students will learn to use graphs, charts, and data to analyze, describe, and explain economic concepts and apply them in real world applications. Psychology Course Code: SOC007 State Code: 04254 Schools: BGHS, PHS, SVHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Social Studies Elective Course Designation: CADR Psychology is the survey study of human behavior and mental processes. This course is designed to explore human personality, motivation, perception, intelligence, altered states and abnormal behavior. It provides an introduction to psychological terms and concepts, and explains the signifi- cance of psychological findings for the student's own life. AP Psychology Course Code: SOC114/SOC214 State Code: 04256 Schools: BGHS, PHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: AP Exam Fee (Optional) Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Social Studies Elective and CWHGP Course Designation: AP Course and CADR The AP psychology course is designed to introduce stu- dents to the systematic and scientific study of behavior and the mental processes of human beings and other animals. Students are exposed to psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major sub- fields within psychology. They also learn about the ethics and methods psychologists use in their science and their practice. Students should expect a workload similar to what they would have if they were to take this course at the college level. This includes extensive reading, active involve- ment in class discussions and activities, and taking notes. Street Law Civics Course Code: SOC023 State Code: 04162 Schools: BGHS, PHS, SVHS Grades: 11-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Civics Social Studies or Occupational Course Designation: CADR Street Law focuses on the rights and responsibilities of citizens in everyday life. Beginning with a study of our constitutional system, Street Law covers the political and judicial systems of local government, Washington State government and the Federal government. Units include criminal law, and juvenile justice, individual liberties and family, business and consumer law, as well as economics. Street Law gives students a realistic picture of citizenship and "life during and after high school". This course quali- fies as a civics graduation requirement for seniors. Must complete state mandated Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA) if required. AP US Government and Politics Course Code: SOC092/SOC292 State Code: 04157 Schools: BGHS, PHS, CAM Grades: 11-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: AP Exam Fee (Optional) Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Social Studies CWHGP/Civics Course Designation: AP Course and CADR This course is designed for the college-bound student who wishes to begin study of our government that allows for more critical thinking and exploration. The course offers a challenging, comprehensive study of U.S. Govern- ment in all subject areas ranging from the penning of the Constitution through the formal structure and workings of our government (including the Supreme Court), to the informal aspects of bureaucracy and interest groups, current events, state constitution and state and local gov- ernment will also be a focus following the exam. Methods include: 1) class and small group discussion, 2) debates, 3) group projects/presentations, 4) research and composi- tion, and 5) media/video/Internet. Students will be strongly encouraged to take the AP exam in May. The exam is not required to take the class. Students who pass the AP exam will be eligible for college credit for the course. Students who do not take the exam will have "U.S. Government and Politics/Honors" on their transcripts. The AP exam will be the final exam for students who take it. The cost of the AP exam will be at the expense of the student. Must complete state mandated Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA). SOCIAL STUDIES
