This will include anatomical terminology, cellu- lar metabolism, tissues, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, and reproductive systems. There will be a variety of proj- ects throughout the year. This class is a hands on lab class which will include the dissection of a fetal pig, sheep brain and a pig heart. Students may take a field trip to the Clark College Anatomy Lab. This course is recommended for students who wish to learn the anatomy and physiology of the human body or who want a challenging, lab oriented science class. Clark College credit available if taking Health Science Careers also during high school. See instructor. Biology Course Code: SCI004/SCI204 State Code: 03051 Schools: BGHS, PHS, RHL, SVHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 This course is also offered online. Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Lab Science Course Designation: CADR Suggested for 9th Grade: Biology is a lab class that engag- es students in the three big ideas of the NGSS life scienc- es. What does it mean to be alive? How do living organ- isms interact in environments? How do we know that all life is related? Students will use the practices of scientists to conduct investigations that help them build under- standing around these three big ideas. This is one of three courses that can be taken in any order to prepare students for the state science exam in 11th grade. Honors Biology Course Code: SCI053/SCI253 State Code: 03052 Schools: CAM, BGHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Lab Science Course Designation: CADR, Honors For students interested in a serious, academically chal- lenging and accelerated course investigating Biological processes including: ecological and animal classification relationships, cellular, molecular and biochemical under- layment to genetics, disease and modern discoveries. The class covers in depth analysis of the biochemistry of energy (photosynthesis and cellular respiration), statisti- cal analysis of labs, and experience with biochemical labs related to DNA and protein analysis. This class will prepare the student for Advanced Placement Biology (a second year, college level Biology class.) AP Biology Course Code: SCI026/SCI226 State Code: 03056 Schools: BGHS, PHS, CAM, RHL Grades: 10-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: Lab Fee and AP Exam Fee (Optional) Prerequisite: Incoming freshmen scoring 4's on ALL Smarter Balanced Assessments or A in science with teacher recommendation. Grade B or better and recom- mendation from freshmen science teacher for incoming sophomores. Suggestion that students have taken Algebra I. Graduation Requirement: Lab Science Course Designation: CADR, AP Course This course is designed to be a college-level course taught at the high school, culminating with a rigorous, com- prehensive, nationally administered exam in May. It is an in-depth study into biochemistry, cell biology, respiration, photosynthesis, cell division, heredity, molecular genetics, evolution, taxonomy, plants, human physiology, human reproduction, behavioral ecology, and ecology. In addition, many laboratory experiments will be part of the AP Biolo- gy course. The curriculum meets and exceeds the Wash- ington State K-12 standards for Life Sciences. The class will be rigorous and is intended for college-bound students with strong study skills and habits, organization skills, and time management capability. Students will be strongly en- couraged to take the AP exam in May. Students who pass the exam may be eligible for college credit for the course. Students will complete a Classroom Based Assessment to meet the Washington State Graduation Requirements. There is a fee for taking the AP exam as well as for addi- tional course materials.
