63 Battle Ground Public Schools High School Course Guide 2020-21 High School Course Descriptions Chemistry Course Code: SCI010/SCI210 State Code: 03101 Schools: BGHS, PHS, RHL, SVHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 This course is also offered online. Prerequisite: Should be taking or passed Algebra I with C or better. Graduation Requirement: Lab Science Course Designation: CADR and Quantitative Chemistry is a college prep lab class that engages stu- dents in the big ideas of the NGSS physical sciences. What is everything made of? (Chemistry) What is energy? (Chemistry) How does matter and energy cycle in Earth Systems? (Earth Science integrated unit) Students will use the practices of scientists to conduct investigations that help them build understanding around these big ideas. This is one of three courses that can be taken to prepare students for the state science exam in 11th grade. This class will use Algebra I and Algebra II level Mathematics. Honors Chemistry Course Code: SCI023/SCI223 State Code: 03102 Schools: BGHS, CAM Grades: 9-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: Prerequisite: 9th grade should have passed Algebra I with B or better and have teacher recommendation. 10-12 grade students should be taking or passed Algebra I with a C or better. Graduation Requirement: Lab Science Course Designation: CADR, Honors and Quantitative Honors chemistry is faster paced than the standard chemistry course. The course covers the chemistry topics (see chemistry description) quickly and goes further than general chemistry. Due to the fast pace, students need to have good organizational and study skills. The course works on the chemistry knowledge as well as organiza- tion, problem solving, study habits and reading for under- standing. This course uses a variety of assignments, tests, quizzes, text reading, problem solving, labs, and writing lab reports. AP Chemistry Course Code: SCI015/SCI215 State Code: 03106 Schools: BGHS Grades: 10-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: Lab Fee and AP Exam Fee (Optional) Prerequisite: It is suggested that students be taking Algebra I or have taken Algebra I with a grade of C or bet- ter. It is also suggested that students have taken Chemis- try or Honors Chemistry before this course. Graduation Requirement: Lab Science Course Designation: CADR, AP Course and Quantitative This course focuses on the 5 major areas of emphasis college chemistry: thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibri- um, electrochemistry, and acid-based equilibria. Students must have a solid understanding of high school chemistry for this class. This class will prepare students to take the AP Chemistry test in May (optional). Some labs will require out of class time. Students who pass the AP exam will be eligible for college credit. The cost of the AP Exam will be at the expense of the student. Earth and Space Science Course Code: SCI013/SCI213 State Code: 03001 Schools: BGHS, PHS, SVHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 This course is also offered online. Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Lab Science Course Designation: CADR Suggested for 9th Grade: Earth and Space Science is a lab class that engages students in the three big ideas of the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) Earth and Space sciences. What is the Earth's place in the Universe? How do Earth's systems interact? and How do humans impact Earth's systems? Students will use the practices of scientists to conduct investigations that help them build understanding around these three Earth and Space big ideas. This is one of three courses that can be taken in any order to prepare students for the state science exam in 11th grade.
