AP Environmental Science Course Code: SCI116/SCI216 State Code: 03207 Schools: BGHS, PHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: Lab Fee and AP Exam Fee (Optional) Prerequisite: Should have taken Algebra 1 and is recom- mended to have a B or better in two lab science classes. Graduation Requirement: Lab Science Course Designation: CADR, AP Course This course is designed to be a college-level taught at the high school, culminating with a rigorous, com-prehensive, nationally administered exam in May. It is an in-depth study into earth systems, ecosystems, populations, land and water use, energy resources and consumption, pollution, and global change. In addition, 18 required laboratory experiments will be part of the AP Environmental Science course. The curriculum meets many of the Washington State K-12 standards for life and earth sciences. The class will be rigorous and is intended for college-bound students with strong study skills and habits, organizational skills, and time management capability. Students will be strongly encouraged to take the AP exam in May and those who pass the exam may be eligible for college credit. There is a fee for taking the AP exam and for additional course materials (textbooks and class fees). Food Science Course Code: SCI040/SCI240 State Code: 19254 Schools: BGHS, PHS, SVHS Grades: 10-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Lab Science or Occupational Course Designation: Science Lab, CADR Throughout this class, students will conduct food related laboratory investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. This course focuses on the relationship between food and nutrition, health, and culinary arts. Students will study a variety of topics that include metabolism and energy transfer in living organisms, homeostasis, food additives, food safety, and food preparation. This course provides a strong background for nutritional science, dietetics, as well as careers related to the food industry. Forensics Course Code: SCI057/SCI257 State Code: 15055 Schools: BGHS, PHS Grades: 11th-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Lab Science or Occupational Course Designation: Science Lab, CADR This Year-long course will be for students who would like to do an upper level science course as it relates to forensic science and crime scene investigations. Students will learn to apply principles of biology, geology, anatomy, chemistry and physics to crime scene scenarios. This course is aligned with NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and prepares students for the WCAS (Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science). Students will get experience in science lab with crime scene scenarios as well as get information about careers in criminology (including law, public safety, corrections and security). Guest speakers will come and talk about their experience and education to get into the criminology field. Horticulture Science @ BGHS Course Code: AGR001/AGR201 State Code: 18052 Plant Science @ PHS Course Code: AGR047/AGR247 State Code: 18051 Grades: 9-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: Lab Fee Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Lab Science or Occupational Course Designation: Science Lab, CADR Here's the dirt! Horticulture/Plant Science is an exciting and beneficial lab science leading to lifelong enjoyment! Using a combination of classroom and greenhouse experiences, students will explore topics such as careers in the industry, propagation, pruning, pests, plant growth and development, soil science, landscaping, vegetable gardening, leadership, and also create student projects. This course covers aspects of the horticulture industry with the scientific method, and is aligned to the NGSS life science standards.
