65 Battle Ground Public Schools High School Course Guide 2020-21 High School Course Descriptions Integrated Earth/Physical Science Course Code: SCI030/SCI230 State Code: 03201 Schools: CAM Grades: 9-11th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Lab Science Course Designation: CADR and Lab Science Integrated Earth/Physical Science is a year-long course of study covering chemistry, physics and earth science topics in two semesters. It is a survey course that focuses on a variety of scientific principles and skills necessary to be successful in science. Projects, lab experiments and activ- ities will be performed by the student on a regular basis. Students will be required to read, summarize or discuss current events in science. Students will learn to follow the scientific method and write detailed lab reports. Microbiology/Zoology Course Code: SCI005/SCI205 State Code: 03061 / 03060 Schools: BGHS Grades: 10-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: Lab Fee Prerequisite: Grade of B or better in Biology Graduation Requirement: Science Lab Course Designation: CADR and Science Lab An advanced biological science, Zoology is a lab sur- vey course of the animal kingdom, including the major invertebrate and vertebrate phyla. Microbiology is a lab science course covering cell physiology and "cutting edge" biological research techniques and genetic engineering. The course will survey the microbial world and teach tech- niques in dealing with bacteria, protozoa and fungi. This course is recommended for students who plan a career in the biological or health science fields. Natural Resources Course Code: AGR040/AGR240 State Code: 18003 Schools: BGHS, PHS Grades: 10-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: Lab Fee Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Lab Science or Occupational Course Designation: Science Lab Our natural resources are vitally important to all of us. All citizens should understand the scientific and manage- ment principles involved with our major resources. Students will study our most important resources includ- ing: water, air, soil, forests, minerals, fossil fuels, and wildlife. The class will include projects, lab activities and field stud- ies. This course is aligned with the NGSS physical science standards. Does not meet NCAA eligibility. . Principles of Engineering Course Code: SCI036/SCI236 State Code: 21005 Schools: PHS only Grades: 9-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: Lab Fee Prerequisite: Algebra I Graduation Requirement: Lab Science (Physics), Occupa- tional or Elective Course Designation: Science Lab and Quantitative Principles of Engineering is a course for students who are interested in engineering careers. Students will learn about various technology systems and manufacturing process- es through hands-on projects, while using Math, science, and technology. Using activities, projects, and problems, students learn firsthand how engineers use Math, science, and technology in an engineering problem-solving process. This class is strongly recommended for students who plan to pursue an engineering degree in college. Leadership and team-building activities are emphasized. Students have an opportunity to participate in Skills USA, TSA, or related student leadership organizations. Principles of Science Olympiad - Independent Study Course Code: SCI055/SCI255 State Code: 03202 Schools: BGHS only Grades: 9-12th Length: Year-long Credit: 1 Course Fee: Lab Fee Prerequisite: Must be on the Science Olympiad Team, signature of SciOly coach. Graduation Requirement: Elective Course Designation: This is an independent course for Science Olympiad concepts. Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Earth Science and Technology are blended into this exciting class that allows students to develop and apply their science skills as they solve unique problems in several disciplines of science. The class will be based on the year's current Science Olympiad rules. Students enrolled in this class will be required to complete at the regional Science Olympiad in the Spring.
