74 Battle Ground Public Schools High School Course Guide 2020-21 Course Designation: Science Lab Two-hour block class: This course is designed for the more serious student that has a desire to more fully understand the systems of the automobile. Areas of study are: Electrical, Starting systems, charging systems, Brakes, Ignition systems, Computer controls, Fuel systems, and Engine rebuilding (using a small gas engine). Students that take Auto I and Auto II can get a third year science credit. Auto Technology III Course Code: VTI009/VTI209 State Code: 20103 Schools: BGHS, PHS Grades: 10-12th Length: Semester to Year-long, Credit: 0.5 1 2 Hour Block Class Course Fee: Fee required Prerequisite: Auto Technology II Graduation Requirement: Occupational or Elective Course Designation: CTE Dual Credit Two-hour block class: The course picks up where the Auto II leaves off. Typically the remaining ASE repair areas are covered: Transmissions, Suspension, Steering & Alignment, Powertrain, and Air Conditioning. Live customer work provides a wide range of experiences depending on the repair needs of the vehi- cle. This is a block class at both schools, but sometimes a student just takes one period. Auto Detail/Collision Repair Course Code: VTI180/VTI280 State Code: 20115 Schools: PHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Semester to Year-long Credit: 0.5 1 Course Fee: Fee required Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Occupational or Elective Course Designation: Semester 1: Students will explore and follow Safe usage procedures for tools and repair techniques used within the shop environment. Auto detailing procedures will be explained, demonstrated, and practiced. Spot repair tech- niques, tools, and procedures will also be covered. Basic parts replacement will be practiced. Possible field trips and guest speakers will be explored to enhance the stu- dents experience as well. The grading will come in large part from attendance, participation, attitude. Semester 2: During second semester students demon- strate the proper selection of tools and materials needed to perform metal straightening and plastic filler repair processes. Prepare surface by choosing and applying appropriate materials, sand, clean, prepare surface for paint. Repair sheet metal damage, demonstrate panel and parts replacement techniques not covered first semester. Explore various welding processes used to repair vehi- cles of both steel and aluminum construction. Field trip and guest speaker opportunities will be explored sec- ond semester also to enhance student's experience this semester as well. *Potential pedal car project to enter in Portland Roadster Show. Basic Car Care Course Code: VTI019 State Code: 20103 Schools: PHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: Fee required Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Occupational or Elective Course Designation: Basic Car Care is a one-semester course for students who would like to learn about the Automotive basics in a safe and FUN environment. Maintenance of the automobile will be covered with hands-on experiences offered: survival skills such as changing a flat tire, checking and filling the various fluids to the proper levels, identifying the various fluids found under the hood, performing an oil and filter change, checking electrical fuses, changing wiper blades, etc. Introduction of some basic tools that are used in auto repair are covered. Vehicle operation and components are introduced and discussed along with demonstrations in the shop (lab) area. You won't be asking yourself, "When will I ever use this?" **Students who take this course and want auto for the full year can take 2nd semester Auto Technology II (VTI231) in the 2nd semester. Small Gas Engines Course Code: AGR012 State Code: 20110 Schools: BGHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: Fee required Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Occupational or Elective Course Designation: Students learn the principles of operation of 4- and 2- stroke engines, tool identification, and safety in small gas engine shop. Using both classroom and shop activities, students will learn the basics of engine rebuilding on L-head and OHV motors. Repair of Recreational vehicles is embedded into the curriculum.
