High School Course Descriptions ELECTIVES Semester 2: Students will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of child development through a combination of classroom curriculum(Modules 1-5) and experience in our on-site pre-school. Students will understand child development theories in physical, emotional, and cognitive growth, as well as health, safe- ty, and nutritional issues. Students will learn to develop positive interpersonal skills by working with children of various skill levels, including children with special needs. Regular attendance and participation is expected, as well as workplace professionalism. This course is articulated with Clark College ECE. STARS/MERIT industry certifica- tion is available upon completion of modules 1-5 and 6-10. Students that complete and meet requirements of Child Development I & II have the opportunity to receive dual credit to Clark College in Early Childhood Education, and initial child-care certification in Washington State. Prairie Pre-school II - Child Dev II Course Code: HEC054/HEC254 State Code: 19051 Schools: PHS Grades: 10-12th Length: Semester or Year-long Credit: 0.5 1 Course Fee: Fee required Prerequisite: Prairie Preschool I Graduation Requirement: Occupational or Elective Course Designation: CTE Dual Credit Semester 1: Working hands-on with preschool students, 3 days a week, you will be part of a team working with preschool students to discover how children learn! In this class you will gain skills and confidence that will benefit you in the future as a teacher, parent, or caregiver of any kind. This course will cover health and safety practices associated with early childhood that will include CPR, First Aid, AED, and Blood Borne Pathogens trainings. Regular attendance and participation in classroom activities and practicum is expected as well as workplace professionalism. Semester 2: Students will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of child development through a combination of classroom curriculum and practicum experience in our on-site pre-school. The course will delve deeper into how to work with kids that have special needs and the services provid- ed for them, as well as develop skills and understanding of observation and reporting. Students will learn how to plan, create, and instruct academic activities in our on-site practicum lab. Students will gain skills necessary to obtain CPR, First Aid, AED, and Food Handlers certification as well as being active in a program that keeps their STARS/ MERIT skills current. Regular attendance and participation in classroom activities and practicum is expected as well as workplace professionalism. Teen Parenting I Course Code: HEC025 State Code: 19255 Schools: SVHS Grades: 9-12th Length: Semester Credit: 0.5 Course Fee: None Prerequisite: None Graduation Requirement: Elective Course Designation: Designed to help students learn about adjusting to teen pregnancy and teen parenthood. It provides the infor- mation needed to help them make the life-changing decisions that lie ahead. Topics: mechanics of pregnancy: prenatal development; prenatal care; nutrition and exer- cise during pregnancy; preparations for parenting; labor and delivery, recovery and newborn care.
