A standards-based report card lists the knowledge and skills that students are responsible for learning in each academic subject at a particular grade level. Students receive numerical grades based on the academic key and that show how well they understand each standard. e Washington State Learning Standards, which include the Common Core State Standards for English language arts and math, are a written description of what students are expected to know and be able to do at a specific stage in their education. In addition, students get separate marks for work habits called Habits for Successful Learners. What is the report card telling me? e report card shows your child's understanding of the standards that have been covered to that point in the year. In addition, the report card shows grades for behaviors, your child's attendance record, and assessment information. What is the time frame for the report card? e school year is divided into a two-semester reporting system. One to two weeks aer the semester ends, you will receive your child's official report card for that semester. Is the report card the only information I will get about my child's learning? No, teachers provide a variety of communications, including parent-teacher conferences, newsletters, emails, and phone calls, throughout the year. You are encouraged to contact your child's teacher at any time with questions. What is the difference between academic subject grades and habits for successful learners? Our new K-4 report card separates grades on academic subjects from grades on student behaviors, allowing teachers to more accurately report student learning. Your child will receive two kinds of grades: one is based on his or her understanding of academic subjects and scored on a scale of 1–4, and the other is based on his or her demonstration of successful learning habits and scored on a scale of T, S, and R. Can my child's grade drop from semester to end of year? It is possible that your child's first-semester grade could go down at the end of the year. Let's compare it to a 1-mile fitness run with an expectation of completing the run in 10 minutes. A student could run the first half in under five minutes, but then slow down in the second half of the run and not meet the 10-minute expectation. Can my child advance to the next grade level if they receive less than a 3? Students typically advance to the next grade level, but he or she might need additional interventions and supports. Which district assessments are reported on the new report card? District assessments included on the report card are easyCBM and Fountas & Pinnell (F&P). e easyCBM scores are reported on a scale from low risk to high risk and show whether a student is at risk of falling behind grade-level expectations. Students identified at high risk or some risk on easyCBM will be assessed with F&P screening to determine specific needs. e higher the risk, the more intervention is needed for the student to achieve the standards in that subject area. Some students at low risk also could receive F&P testing as a reading diagnostic tool. F&P reading levels are given as a number in which the first number indicates the reading grade level and the second number indicates the month of the school year. For example, 2.8 means second grade, eighth month reading level. Less than 1 indicates kindergarten reading level. e new, state-mandated standards based assessments are not listed on the report card. ese scores are reported separately. Will there be teacher comments? Teachers have the option to provide brief comments in each subject area about your child's learning and also for the class as a whole. Where can I get more information about the state learning standards?
