10 | BATTLE GROUND PUBLIC SCHOOLS e district continues to take a proactive approach to facility maintenance and growth and turns to its facilities department and maintenance and custodial crews to ensure safe, clean and secure learning environments. Below is a list of projects completed in the past year. Middle School STEM Facilities crews, in partnership with the Career and Technical Education and Technology departments, created a new STEM (science, technology, engineering and math education) classroom at Pleasant Valley Middle School. e classroom provides the 21st Century learning environment necessary for Project Gateway, a curriculum specifically designed for STEM in the middle school. A former woodshop was divided into a technology-driven classroom designed for computer-based student collaboration and a new woodshop with updated tools and safety measures. Separated by a glass wall, students can design projects on the computer side and fabricate their design in the woodshop. Strong Roofs Facilities crews responded quickly last spring when a truss broke on the roof of Pleasant Valley Middle School. Crews removed the HVAC unit that was in danger of being damaged and created a temporary fix without a loss of school time and fixed it permanently during the summer. Special Education Facility crews converted three traditional classrooms to self-contained classrooms with bathrooms and kitchens at Maple Grove, Tukes Valley Middle and Prairie High schools to meet the needs of special education students and create a positive learning environment for students with special needs. Priorities for 2015-16 School Year Several buildings will get improvements in the next calendar year, including new roofs at Maple Grove and CASEE B, parking lot upgrades at Prairie High School and the Pleasant Valley campus and district-wide exterior painting and preventive maintenance, including electrical improvements, roof repair, irrigation and water systems and landscaping. Facilities Improvement Team A new committee called the Facilities Improvement Team (FIT) has been tasked by the Board of Directors with creating a long-term facilities management plan. e plan will include recommendations for current and new facilities that meet the academic and learning needs of students and keep pace with community growth. "Our leadership team, in partnership with board members, staff and community partners, is working on identifying clear values, including the role of education, how we support our staff, the safety and security of our buildings, and meeting the demands of our population growth," said Mark Hottowe, BGPS superintendent. "All these must work in concert with each other and need to be aligned if we want to be successful."
