GRADE DEFINITION T Typically demonstrated. S Sometimes demonstrated. R Rarely demonstrated. Habits for Successful Learners e Habits key uses T, S and R to report on student work habits. How to read the Report Card Two-semester reporting e report card is split into two semesters. Grades for each semester indicate student progress at that point in time on year-long learning standards. e academic subjects key uses a four-point grading system. Academic subjects are organized by core areas and can include English language arts, math, science, and social studies and specialist classes such as health and fitness, music, and the arts. Each subject is subdivided into learning standards that summarize the main learning areas. e goal for our students is to achieve a 3 in all subject areas. A 3 indicates that a student understands the content to this point, and is on track to move to the next level of learning. is involves students increasing their understanding throughout the school year so that by the end of the year the student is ready for the next grade level's standards. A 4 is reserved for work that demonstrates considerable depth of knowledge beyond proficiency, and could involve complex reasoning skills, multi-step problem solving, and integrated learning standards. A student who gets all 3s and no 4s is definitely on track to be career and college ready by high school graduation. Academic Subjects Key ACADEMIC SUBJECTS - BASED ON SEMESTER BENCHMARKS GRADE CATEGORY DEFINITION BASKETBALL ANALOGY: e following helps define each grade in layman's terms, using the example of a student playing basketball. 4 Exemplary Student work has reached a level of excellence that shows considerable depth of knowledge at this grade level. e student successfully demonstrates all of the fundamental skills and plays the game of basketball. He or she understands offense, defense, how to run plays and can shoot, dribble, pass, block, etc. 3 Proficient Student work indicates the competence and ability to progress to the next level of career and college readiness. e student demonstrates the fundamental skills of basketball. He or she can shoot, dribble and pass with correct form and accuracy. 2 Developing Student work shows progress but has not yet attained a level representative of this grade level. e student is working toward demonstrating the fundamental skills of basketball. He or she might be able to shoot, but might not be able to dribble, or can pass but with poor form. e player needs additional training and practice to develop skills. 1 Beginning Student work represents that of someone just starting to learn the subject. e student is just learning the fundamental skills of basketball. He or she might understand the difference between each skill, but needs specific coaching and practice to fully develop the basic skills. M is mark is used for students who have significant grade-level learning modifications, which may include students with an Individualized Education Program, in the Aspire program, or English language learners.
