SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE As I write this narrative, the weather is sunny, warm and finally calmed down from a winter that was pretty wild with immense amounts of rain and snow that disrupted school and certainly added some amount of stress to our lives. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE While the weather was wild, it did not impede our steady progress and improvement in the many goal areas we have for your children. High academic achievement is one of our primary goals. This can be accomplished with quality instruction from our teachers and support staff. We are more consistent than ever before with the use of "best practices" in all our schools. I believe if an instructional practice is known to be effective and it shows results in a few schools, ALL our schools should be utilizing the practice to help students learn at high levels. Teachers are more reflective in their instruction, working with their evaluator to gather evidence of instructional competence. They engage in discussions with their principal and other teachers to identify strategies and techniques that help students learn at high levels. We adopted several new curricula this year for some high school math and social studies subjects that we are confident will add value to the efforts our teaching staff are making. SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING We know that life can be complex and stressful for our students. When they are coping with emotional issues, they are not able to participate in learning at a high level. All our schools are working to be more mindful of the social emotional health of students. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT This report contains the district's average assessment scores and other student achievement data. You will see that our students compare favorably to the State and in looking at regional data, Battle Ground more than holds its own when compared to our neighboring districts. You can be sure your student is offered every opportunity to be successful. It's been a great year in the Battle Ground School District. We look forward to continuing our work in the next year. Please have a restful and safe summer. Mark Hottowe Superintendent Our Visi INSPIRING EXCELLENCE by connecting every student to a positive future in a competitive global economy.
