Captain Strong Primary Receives 2014 School of Distinction Award

Captain Strong Primary School has received a 2014 School of Distinction Award for outstanding improvement in reading and math sustained over a five-year period. The award is given to the top 5 percent of improving schools in the state of Washington. Just 101 schools in the state, eight in southwest Washington, received the award.

Michael Michaud, Captain Strong's principal, said he is humbled by and appreciative of the award, and attributes student improvement to staff and teacher efforts to meet students' academic, social, and emotional needs. "We have implemented a series of programs over the last few years that have allowed us to make great strides in student achievement by breaking down barriers that typically inhibit students' success in school," said Michael Michaud, Captain Strong's principal. "Captain Strong Primary’s school-wide planning efforts are centered around three primary initiatives:  Response to Intervention (RTI), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and The Leader in Me (TLIM).  Our goal is to blend the shared characteristics of these approaches as a basis for highlighting how best to meet the needs of children."

The award is given by The Center for Educational Effectiveness in partnership with several other state educational associations. Captain Strong will be recognized early next year by Educational Services District 112.
